100 Introduction to Construction

INTRODUCTION

The Introduction to Construction Course is a Foundational Starting Point for All of Our Construction Students

100 Introduction to Construction is a self-paced four module Introduction to Construction course is an introduction to the construction industry, its parties, and processes.

Students will become familiar with the different types of construction, the diverse roles, stages, and processes of a construction project. Students will develop an awareness of safety regulations, safety inspection, construction documents and their uses.

Additionally, students will develop a working understanding of construction project management topics including estimating, project management, scheduling, close out and pay out.

SELF-PACED

The Introduction to Construction course is self paced, which means there are no set class times. You must complete the course within 5 weeks as noted on the registration email yet you can work through the course as quickly as you like.

There are no weekly goals and no interaction with other students. Work at your own pace. Your unique completion date is included in the registration email you will receive from our office.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this online seminar you should be able to:

  • Understand and use standard construction terminology

  • Identify the primary professions engaged in construction and their roles in the construction processes

  • Identify different types of construction

  • Develop an understanding of the materials and processes used in construction

  • Develop an awareness of construction safety regulations and the role of OSHA

  • Explain and discuss the various types of contract documents

  • Become familiar with building codes, zoning, and inspection.

  • Understand basic concepts of estimating, project management and scheduling

  • Identify and ascertain information about the careers in construction

SEMINAR ORGANIZATION & GRADING

The Introduction to Construction course is organized into 4 learning modules. Plan to study one per week.

In each module there is a quiz (10 points). Half way through the seminar there is a written assignment (15 points). At the end of the seminar there is a practicum (20 points).It is important that the student keep up with the seminar and not fall behind. Course modules will be released upon the completion of the quiz.

GRADING POLICIES

Graded assignments will consist of one quiz for each module, submitting a mid term project, and final practicum.  Each quiz will count for 20 points, the midterm project will count for 15 points, and the final practicum will count for 15 points.

Quiz grades will automatically be posted. You will have full access to your grade sheet so you will be able to keep track of how you are doing at all times.

Your overall grade in the course will be determined by the total number of points you have accumulated on quizzes and assignments. 

You will be given more information about the grading and other course matters in the Orientation Module.

The grading scale is as follows:

A

100 to 89 points

B

88 to 79 points

C

78 to 69 points

D

69 to 59 points

F

Anything less than 59 points
